Vero Beach Christmas Parade

The Vero Beach Christmas Parade is an evening parade that will be held on Saturday Dec. 3rd along Ocean Drive on the Beach. The Parade starts at the intersection of Cardinal & Flamevine, turns east to Ocean Drive and proceeds along Ocean Drive to Greytwig where it disperses.
So we can look like a unified group, we ask that each child and adult wear a Latitude 27.39 Sail Club T-shirt, and a red Santa hat (can be purchased at the dollar store). The parade sponsors ask each participant and viewer to donate 1 or 2 canned good food items to the parade (these food items will be given to the local food bank.)
The parade starts at 5:30 PM on Flamevine. The floats will line up along Cardinal Drive starting at 4:00. You must be at the YSF float by 5:15 to participate in the parade. Please allow time for parking and shuttling from your car to the start of the parade. The YSF Float is number 26 in the parade line-up. The number will be posted on the passenger side of the windshield of every tow vehicle. YSF's float will be waiting on Cardinal near Dahlia Lane. We ask that you drop off your children and everyone but the driver (including your food donations) on Dahlia Lane near Cardinal Drive. (Cardinal Drive will be closed to traffic, so you will have to turn around and drive to the end of the parade route to park.)
Please park near the end of the parade route which is Ocean Drive at Greytwig. Suggestions of where to park include; on a side street (NOT ON GREYTWIG) or at JC Park. Once you park, walk to the shuttle cars. We have 3 cars which will have a YSF sign taped to the windshield. They will be driven by either Toby Jarman, Marty Baker or Dan Thomas. The shuttle cars will be located at the intersection of Live Oak Rd. and Ocean Drive. Please identify yourselves when you enter the car. The cars will shuttle you to the YSF float.
The shuttle cars will stop running at 5:00. After that you are on your own.
Once the YSF float reaches the end of the parade (Ocean Dr. at Greytwig), you have 2 choices; 1. walk with your children to your car, or 2. have your children ride in the tow vehicle to the Marina where you can pick them up.
As you can see car pooling is advised. (Perhaps one family leaving their car at the marina and the another family leaving theirs at the end of the parade route.)
A few more suggestions..........you may want to layer with the Latitude 27.39 T-shirt on the outside............your children may want to bring a power bar if they get hungry...........bring a flash light because it is dark at the end of the parade route.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________

After the parade, the group met at the 2002 Restaurant at Miracle Mile for dinner. We have our own room and will order off the menu and each person will pay for his own meal. When you arrive, tell them you are with the Parade Group. 2002 Restaurant (address: 575 21st Street) is located on the Publix side of Miracle Mile next of TooJays. Since we are a large group I asked the wait staff to bring the food out as ready, so you may order when you arrive if you desire. Our group will arrive in stages. The YSF float should be at the end of the parade route by 6:30. It takes a while to get to your cars and drive to the restaurant.

Summer Camp Youth Sailing Foundation June 2011 at the Moorings

A deal was made between the Youth Sailing Foundation and the Moorings Yacht Club and the Summer Sailing Camp was born. I was not involved at the onset, thus I am not sure how it all came about. I am involved now so I can tell you something about it as it is in process. You may have seen a few items in the Press Journal about the Youth Sailing Foundation of Indian River County during the past few weeks. I did.

Optimist Sailing Dingy -Vero Beach Yacht Club - Built by Judy Allan

Judy Allan stands beside the first boat she has ever built, an Optimist Sailing Dingy, aptly named for the Vero Beach Yacht Club, which was her sponsor. Judy shared that she became involved with building the Optimist Sailing Dingy earlier this year at the request of Dan Thomas, the Vice Chairman/Director of the Youth Sailing Foundation of Indian River County, Inc. This was the first time Judy had built a boat and she thoroughly  enjoyed the process, except perhaps for all the sanding.  She worked a half hour or several hours at a time and so it took her over six months to finish.  An observer can tell that a good portion of that time was spent using a brush to apply many coats of varnish, an effort which greatly enhanced the boat’s appearance. Judy found everyone she worked with to be both helpful and fun and she is now ready to build another one. Her first boat will soon be going into the fleet of Optis that are available for children to sail through the Youth Sailing Foundation.  Way to go Judy!  She is a beauty!

The OPTI 420

Youth Sailing Foundation of Indian River County Seeking Support

Some of you may have already heard about the successful Summer Camp Program held at the Moorings by the Youth Sailing Foundation of Indian River County.  The sponsors as well as the kids who attended learned much. Even the parents learned something.

Heard on the water during this learning experience was the need for larger boats. Who said that? It seems that the parents saw how much fun the kids were having and after many nights of listening to the kids about the days on the water started thinking about getting out on the water.

So here comes the good news. There is another size OPTI class known as the 420, just for that purpose. It seems that the folks at YSF took it seriously and so they have a request of the local entusiats.

The Youth Sailing Foundation of Indian River County, Inc. has received a matching grant from Heisman Trust to be used for the purchase of two larger sailboats (420's).  The “420's” are needed for the children who either become too old or too large to race the 8 foot Opti sailing dinghies YSF now uses.  Any donations made between now and December 15, 2011 will be matched dollar for dollar by the Heisman Trust up to a maximum amount of $7,500.00.

Anyone wishing to make a contribution can do so or by mailing a check to Youth Sailing Foundation,  P.O. Box 612,  Vero Beach, FL 32961 or by credit card at http://ysfirc.org/support.asp .
Since YSF is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, donations are eligible as charitable deductions for income tax purposes.  YSF greatly appreciates the continuing support from our generous donors.
